When THIS TIME was released as Rick's first full-length CD, it was done so as a cross section of the various genres of writing he had assembled over the years. He selected songs that he thought would best represent where he had been emotionally at "This Time", even though he had written some of the songs many years before.
Saving Baghdad remains a favorite of his. He thinks of his son, US Air Force Tech Sgt. Michael J. Rinaldi, and the stories Michael would bring back from his five military tours in Iraq. Heat exceed one hundred twenty degrees, a daily bounding from sands storms, noise, the smell of grease and jet fuel, homesick men and women crying at night, death, remorse, pain, fatigue, yet glory and pride. A relentless commitment to a cause private to each individual.
Rick began tinkering with the piano at the age of six, and during the coming years he would watch while his sisters took lessons. He practiced relentlessly while no one was around, often thinking that his fingers were more suited to that of a bricklayer since they were not long, graceful, or slender. But at a young age he sensed he could write a compelling melody, so he maintain a piano practice schedule of his own that lasted years, and later he picked up the guitar and maintain the same sort of practice discipline.
When Rick felt he was finally coming into his own as a musician and songwriter, a turn of events took him away from high school, music, and friends. He married when he was seventeen, and had his first child a few months later, and was the father of three children at twenty-one years old. Vowing not to raise children under the roof of a starving artist, he set aside music and his desire for higher education. Over the years he continued to write, but it was kept highly personal and very secretive.
In his later 30's, Rick met Lee Darby. Lee took a deep interest in his music, and convinced Rick that it was just too good to sit on a shelf. After years of secretive composing, and now newly inspired by Lee Darby, Rick began to take his music more seriously. The results are displayed and felt in the release of THIS TIME.
Among his favorite artists are masters that include Victor Borga, Chip Davis, Enya, Janis Ian, Jeff Lynn, BB King, Maria Calis, Louie Armstrong, Bobby Darren, and Nelson Riddle.
